Summary

The Community Educator AmeriCorps will implement and maintain KTMB’s Adult Education program, which is designed to inspire community members to be stewards of our community’s land and water through community outreach, adult education, and KTMB’s Recycling Guide. The Community Educator AmeriCorps will also help to maintain and implement KTMB’s Youth Education program by presenting KTMB’s Warriors educational curriculum. KTMB’s Youth Education program engages students in S.T.E.M.-based, hands-on learning activities with the goal of developing stewards for the future, as well as improved academic engagement and better preparation for educational success.

Position Description

The Community Educator AmeriCorps will be an essential member of KTMB’s team. The Community Educator AmeriCorps will primarily work to implement KTMB’s Adult Education program by presenting to community groups, organizations, and businesses. This person will also maintain KTMB’s database of community recycling resources, in addition to acting as a KTMB representative during community events. The Community Educator AmeriCorps will assist in KTMB’s Youth Education program by presenting to K-12 students throughout Washoe County. This person will also maintain current relationships with community groups, organizations, and businesses, as well as Washoe County School District teachers and other community educators. The Community Educator AmeriCorps will also have the opportunity to participate in KTMB’s cleanups and other programs.

 

KTMB is a private, 501 (c) (3) nonprofit dedicated to creating a cleaner, more beautiful region through education and active community involvement.  For over 30 years, KTMB has been working with schools, businesses, municipalities, community groups and individuals to keep our open space areas, the Truckee River, business corridors, and neighborhoods beautiful for all to enjoy through our education programs, beautification, and cleanups.

 

Service Location: Reno, NV

 

Timeline for Service: September 9, 2019-August 14, 2020

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Implement KTMB’s Adult and Youth Education program; 

  • Maintain and update KTMB’s Recycling Guide;

  • Assist in the enhancement and development of KTMB’s Adult Education presentations; 

  • Maintain existing and develop new partnerships with businesses, community groups, organizations, school teachers and other community educators;

  • Assist in teacher training/s based on Waste, Weed and Watershed Warriors;

  • Execute field trip programs for primary grade students to KTMB’s Sensory Garden at Idlewild Park;

  • Support partnerships and plans for seasonal youth education programming.

Qualifications

  • Passionate commitment to KTMB’s mission and vision;

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or a related field;

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;

  • Experience working with teachers and students in a formal or informal classroom setting;

  • Exceptional writing skills;

  • Strong communication and public speaking skills;

  • Strong organizational skills;

  • High degree of initiative and spirit of service;

  • Preferred: reading, writing and speaking competency in Spanish language;

  • Preferred: strong understanding of education standards;

  • Preferred: experience teaching in formal or informal settings.

 

AmeriCorps State/National

KTMB’s Community Educator AmeriCorps position is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and will serve within the AmeriCorps program. Member Benefits

In return for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance of $13,992 for the year, health benefits during their service and have the option of receiving a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $6,095.
