Explore your parks with Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation

 

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation leads weekly interpretive hikes in parks near you! Come explore a new location and learn about the ecology and unique history of parks in our area. Plan on spending a little more than one hour on each walk. Distances range from 0.5 miles to 1.5 miles. Hikes begin Thursday, April 4th, 2019 and will continue every Thursday through the end of September. The walks are free and open to everyone.

Truckee Meadows Nature Study Area

April 04, 2019

6:00 pm

Join us at the former Rosewood Lakes Golf Course to learn about TMPF’s project to restore this 219-acre property into a healthy wetland with a new Nature Study Area! The property is currently closed to the public, but through this Discover Your Parks walk, you can get a sneak peak of this ongoing project. These wetlands are home to a plethora of waterfowl and other wetland creatures, so keep your eyes peeled! Restrooms are available. Dogs are not permitted on this walk.

Directions: (6800 Pembroke Dr. Reno, NV 89502) From downtown, head East on I-80 to exit 20 towards Sparks Blvd/Veterans Pkwy for 6 miles then turn right onto Veterans Pkwy and travel 2.5 miles. Next, turn right onto Pembroke drive and the Rosewood office will be on your left.

Golden Eagle Regional Park: Pah Rah

This 0.6 mile long interpretive nature loop highlights the Native American and natural history of the Pah Rah range. The pathway is flat and paved, making this a pleasant walk for all skill levels. The trail is ADA accessible, and well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome, but unfortunately restrooms are not available at this trail. 

 

Directions: (Golden Eagle Regional Park, Vista Blvd, Sparks, NV 89436) GPS does not take you exactly to the trailhead. Please adhere to the following directions. From the intersection of I-80 and Pyramid Way (NV-445), head north on Pyramid Way. Travel north for 3.2 miles and turn right (east) onto Los Altos Pkwy. Drive about one mile on Los Altos Pkwy., and turn left (north) onto Vista Blvd. Travel 3.6 miles on Vista Blvd. and turn right (south) onto Homerun Dr. Continue south on Homerun Dr. for .5 miles and turn right (south) onto Hans Berry Rd. Continue on Hans Berry Rd. for .5 miles. Drive around the sports fields until you reach the parking lot for the Pah Rah Trailhead on your right (south).

Crissie Caughlin Park

Crissie Caughlin Park is a stretch of green along the Truckee River. The park features picnic sites, a playground and a horseshoe pit. Crissie Caughlin Park makes its mark along the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway. West of the George Vicari tree and the horseshoe pit, the bicycle and pedestrian trail continues along the Truckee River: welcome to the Schiappacasse River Pathway. This paved path connects Crissie Caughlin Park with Betsy Caughlin Donnelly Park via the Alum Creek trail. Restrooms are available, and well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (3415 Idlewild Dr. Reno, NV 89509) Head West on East 4th street toward Old U.S. 395 N/N Virginia Street for about a mile, then turn right onto Keystone ave. Travel down Keystone Ave. for about 1 mile and then turn right onto California Ave. Finally, turn left onto Idlewild Drive and your destination should be about 0.2 miles down the road.

Mira Loma & Boynton Slough

Special guest, Rod "The Tree Hunter" will be guiding this walk

Come down to Mira Loma Park and join TMPF while we walk about 1 mile along the Boynton Slough and dry creek. The slough and creek provide habitat for cattails, geese, ducks, and other water birds. If you keep your eye's peeled, you might find a private collection of old farm machinery! Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome and restrooms are available.

 

Directions: (3000 S. McCarran Blvd) Mira Loma Park is located at 3000 S. McCarran Blvd in southeast Reno at the corner of S. McCarran Blvd. and Mira Loma Dr. From downtown Reno, head south on I-580/US-395. Take exit 63 for Kietzke Ln. and turn left (south) onto Kietzke Ln. Take your first left (east) onto S. McCarran Blvd. and continue for 2.7 miles. Turn right (east) onto Mira Loma Dr. and take your first left into the park. Follow the lane to the first parking lot on your right. The surface trails are paved. Restrooms are available. We will meet at the building between the parking lot and Mira Loma Dr.

Ballardini Ranch Trailhead

One of Reno’s newest trail systems, Ballardini Ranch now connects to Galena Creek and Hunter Creek allowing for a long day hike just outside of Reno. We will only be exploring a tiny portion of this trail system, but with views of the entire Truckee Meadows, this will be a park you will want to visit again and again. Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (8799 Lone Tree Ln, Reno, NV 89511) From South McCarran Blvd., turn south onto Lakeside Dr. and drive approximately two miles (You'll pass the entrance to Bartley Ranch as well as Audrey Harris Park). Turn right (west) onto Lone Tree Ln. and drive a little less than a mile. The trailhead will be on your right (north).

Sun Valley Regional Park

This hidden gem of Washoe County will take you through a fascinating Juniper-dominated ecosystem where we will learn about the plants and animals that surround us in the high desert. Discover what makes a healthy desert while seeing an expansive view of the Truckee Meadows. Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.


Directions: (5905 Sidehill Dr, Sun Valley, NV 89433) At the junction of US-395 and I-80, go north on US-395 for 1.4 miles and take exit 70B for Clear Acre Ln. toward Sun Valley. The exit merges onto Clear-Acre Lane heading north and will turn into Sun Valley Blvd. after one mile. Continue north on Clear Acre Ln/Sun Valley Blvd. for 3.25 miles until you reach Quartz Ln. Turn left (west) onto Quartz Ln. and travel .2 miles (three blocks). Turn right (north) onto Sidehill Dr. and go one block. When you see Esther Bennett Elementary on your right (north), turn left (west) and drive to the end of the road. Park in the parking lot and we'll see you there!

Lockwood Loop and Interpretive Trail

This restored section of the Truckee River was once part of a trailer park, but you would never know it today. With a beautiful mix of riparian and high desert views, this walk will take us through an interpretive area full of native plants and animals. There’s even a bit of a surprise at the end you won’t want to miss! Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (981 Lockwood Rd, Sparks, NV 89434) From the junction of the US-395 and I-80, head east on I-80E for seven miles. Take exit 22 for Lockwood. Turn right (southeast) onto Canyon Way and travel for 0.2 miles. Make your second right (east) just before crossing the river and head down the dirt road until you reach the trailhead parking lot. This is where we'll meet. See you all there!

Huffaker Hills: Lakeview Loop

Local geologist, Chris Henry, will help lead us on this pleasant 0.7 mile loop featuring beautiful wildflowers. This walk is great for all skill levels. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome, an there is a pit toilet at the trailhead.


Directions: (Alexander Lake Rd, Reno, NV 89502) From the intersection of S. Virginia St. and S. McCarran Blvd., travel east on S. McCarran Blvd. for 1.4 miles. Turn right (south) onto Alexander Lake Rd. (one street east of Longley Lane). Drive one mile down the curvy road and the trailhead will be on your right-hand side directly after the water tank.

North Valleys Regional Park

Join us as we explore this high desert park that features over 155 acres of open space and a water splash park for kids! Located in the Stead community this park also includes amenities such as a playground, multi-purpose field, community center, skateboard park, grills, concessions, kitchen, picnic area, basketball, volleyball, little league, soccer, and horseshoes, hiking and horse trails. Restrooms are available and well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.


Directions: (8085 Silver Lake Road, Reno, NV 89506) From I-80E, Use the second from the right lane to take US-395N towards Susanville. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for US-395 N/Susanville. Take exit 74 for Lemmon Drive. Keep right at the fork to continue on Lemmon Drive. Merge onto Lemmon Drive and use the left two lanes to turn left onto Sky Vista Parkway. Continue onto Sky Vista Parkway for 1.3 miles until you reach the park.

 

Truckee Meadows Nature Study Area

We love this trail so much, that we're walking it more than once! We may be a little biased seeing as our office is here, but we've had the pleasure to see critters here including muskrats and rabbits, as well as bird species including the Marsh Wren, Northern Harrier, Cinnamon Teal, and so many others. We want you to get the chance to see them too!

Directions: (6800 Pembroke Dr. Reno, NV 89502) From downtown, head East on I-80 to exit 20 towards Sparks Blvd/Veterans Pkwy for 6 miles then turn right onto Veterans Pkwy and travel 2.5 miles. Next, turn right onto Pembroke drive and the Rosewood office will be on your left.

Rancho San Rafael Regional Park: Nature Trail

Discover the secret side of Rancho San Rafael Regional Park as we walk along this interpretive nature trail. Explore the wetland at the base of Evans Canyon and learn how certain plants can tell you where water is located. If we’re lucky, we will see a family of Great Horned Owls! No restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (2975 N Virginia St, Reno, NV 89506) From I-80 in Reno, take Exit 15 for US395-North toward Susanville. Take exit 70A (North McCarran) and stay in the left two lanes. Turn left (west) onto McCarran. Continue driving West for two miles. Turn right (north) on North Virginia Street and get into the left lane. In 1/4 mile, turn left (west) into Rancho San Rafael North Entrance (Basque Monument/Reno Sports Complex). Park in the far right corner of the parking lot by the Evans Canyon Trailhead/Basque Monument.

Galena Creek Regional Park

Located at the base of Mt. Rose, Galena Creek Regional Park is a stunning example of the best the Sierra Nevadas have to offer. Large jeffrey and ponderosa pines line the loop we will be walking and there’s a chance we might even see a black bear. Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

Directions: (18250 Mt Rose Hwy, Reno, NV 89511)  Take 395/280 to Mt Rose Highway (341 West).  Drive about 5.5 miles to the Galena Visitor Center exit.  We will meet in the first large parking area to your right (Galena Visitor Center).

Idlewild Park

One of the best loved parks in Reno, Idlewild Park is full of plenty of hidden ecological and historical gems. We’ll wander through the number of trees, some you can’t see anywhere else in Nevada. Join us and find out just how special this park is.

Directions: (50 Cowan Dr. Reno, NV 89509 ) From downtown Reno, drive south on Arlington Ave. and turn right (west) on 1st St. After 700 feet turn left (south) onto Riverside Dr., and follow the road until it crosses the river. Make your first right (east) on Idlewild Dr, and the park will be on your right. Turn right (north) onto Cowan Dr., and meet us at our office.

Virginia Lake Park

Ever wonder how urban lakes work? We’ll explain how this one was created on this one mile walk around its perimeter. We will also talk about water birds, algae blooms, and geothermal energy. Don’t miss this fun and informative walk.

Directions: (1980 Lakeside Dr, Reno, NV 89509) From the intersection of 4th St. and S. Virginia in Downtown Reno, head south on S. Virginia St. for 1.7 miles. Turn right (west) onto Plumb Lane and drive one block. Turn left (south) onto Lakeside Drive and travel .4 miles on the west side of the lake. We'll meet at the playground at the southwest corner of the lake.

Crystal Peak Park

Take a step back in time as we venture through this Washoe County park located just outside of Verdi. Discover the amazing history of how this park went from being a bustling lumber town, to the park we see today. Ecologically, this is one of the most diverse of our parks as it is located along the Truckee River in a transition zone between the high desert and the mixed conifer forest of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

Directions: (578 Crystal Park Road, Verdi, NV 89439) Follow I-80W out of town and take exit 5 at Verdi. Head straight and you'll reach a roundabout, take the second exit going straight through the roundabout (northwest) and follow 3rd St. (I-80 Business) for about 2.5 miles. Turn left (south) onto Crystal Park Road and make an immediate right (southwest) at the fork . Either continue past the overflow parking to your right or park there. We'll meet in the lower parking area at the bottom of the hill.

Wingfield & Barbara Bennett

The Riverwalk District has been a key part of Reno since the early 1900s and the parks along the river are just as important today as they were back then. Come learn about how they’ve grown and adapted with the city and pick up some fun Reno history as well! Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (10 Ralston St. Reno, NV 89503) Traveling west on I-80, and take exit 12 for Keystone Avenue. Keep left (south) at the exit's fork and merge onto Keystone Ave. Travel 0.5 miles until you reach W. 1st St. Turn left (east) and drive another .5 miles until you reach Arlington Ave. We will meet under the large metal butterfly in Bicentennial Park.

Teglia's Paradise Park

Teglia's Paradise Park is a 38 acre Reno park that includes amentities such as a playground, an exercise court, ponds, an activity center, a picnic shelter, a barbeque area, a rentable shelter, walking paths, and tables/benches. Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

Directions: (2745 Elementary Dr., Reno) From the junction of I-80 and US-395, travel north on US-395 for 0.3 miles. Take exit 69 for Oddie Blvd. and turn right (east) onto Oddie Blvd. Turn right (south) onto Silverada Blvd (just past the pedestrian overpass) and then an immediate left (east) onto Paradise Dr. Paradise Dr. turns south and becomes Carville Dr. Continue on Carville Dr. for a couple hundred feet to Elementary Dr. and turn left (east). We'll meet in the Activity Center parking lot on your left.

Davis Creek Regional Park

Davis Creek Regional Park once was a part of the 4.000-acre Winters Ranch, known in the mid to late-1800s for its thoroughbred horses. The area opened as a park in 1969. We will learn more about Davis Creek park as we walk the 0.7 mile long Nature Trail. Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

Directions: (25 Davis Creek Camp Ground Rd, New Washoe City, NV 89704) Drive south on I-580 and take Exit 50 for Bowers Mansion Road/Nevada 429/Old US-395. Turn right (south) onto Old US-395/Bowers Mansion Rd. Take the 1st right (west) onto Davis Creek Campground Road.

Oxbow Nature Study Area

Come explore this park that offers you an escape to the wilderness without ever having to leave Reno city limits. Beavers, deer, and birds of all shapes and sizes have been spotted on this one-mile loop next to the Truckee River. You never know what you might see, but you are guaranteed an enjoyable time. Restrooms are available. Dogs are not permitted on this walk.

 

Directions: (3100 Dickerson Rd, Reno, NV 89503) Heading west on I-80 take exit 12 on to Keystone Ave. Turn left onto Keystone and take a right on to West 2nd St. Follow West 2nd St until it turns into Dickerson Road. Follow Dickerson Road until you enter Oxbow Nature Study Area and we will meet in the parking lot.

Dorostkar Park

This park sits right on the Truckee River and is a part of the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway. It’s popular with cyclists, hikers, and dog walkers alike. Come learn how to tell if a river is healthy and what role parks like this play in keeping it that way. No restrooms are available, but well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (6331 Mayberry Dr, Reno, NV 89519) From I-80W, take exit 10 for McCarran Blvd W. and turn left (south) onto N. McCarran Blvd. Travel .7 miles and turn right (west) onto W. 4th Street. Travel 1.7 miles on W. 4th St. and turn left (south) onto Mayberry Drive. Drive .3 miles on Mayberry Dr. and Dorostkar Park will be on your left (north). We'll meet in the parking lot.

 

Cottonwood Park: Bat Walk

Please note this walk starts at 7:00 pm. Join us for one of the most exciting shows nature offers as we watch thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats fly out for their nightly feeding. As we walk along the river to watch the bats, we could also see beavers, skunks and other wildlife. You won’t want to miss this walk.

Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (777 Spice Islands Drive, Sparks) Heading east on I-80, take exit 19 and turn south on McCarran Blvd. about .75 miles and turn left onto Greg St. Take your first right onto Spice Island Dr. and follow that about .5 miles to Cottonwood Park on your right.

Bartley Ranch Regional Park

Ever wonder what Reno was like during the days of the wild west? Local historians, Jack Hursh and Loren Jahn, will take us on an explorative journey through time as we tour the Old Huffaker Schoolhouse and then follow the Quail Run Trail to the Historic Ranch Heritage Preserve buildings that were brought to the park with the help of Truckee Meadows Remembered. Don’t miss this exciting look into Reno’s past!  Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.


Directions: (6000 Bartley Ranch Rd, Reno, NV 89511) From South McCarran, turn south onto Lakeside Dr. Travel less than 0.5 mile down Lakeside Drive, turn left (southeast) onto Bartley Ranch Rd. Go under the covered bridge and turn into the parking lot on your right. We'll meet at the historic Huffaker School House on your right (west).

Truckee Meadows Nature Study Area

The proposed Truckee Meadows Nature Study Area has so much to offer with a rich ecological and natural history. Think you've already seen everything the wetland has to offer? Come put your identification skills to the test with our hike leaders. We're bound to see something new! This trail is normally closed to the public, so join us for an exclusive look at this unique outdoor space! Dogs will not be allowed on this walk.

Directions: (6800 Pembroke Dr. Reno, NV 89502) From downtown, head East on I-80 to exit 20 towards Sparks Blvd/Veterans Pkwy for 6 miles then turn right onto Veterans Pkwy and travel 2.5 miles. Next, turn right onto Pembroke drive and the Rosewood office will be on your left.

Rancho San Rafael Park: Arboretum

Rancho San Rafael Regional Park is one of the largest parks in Washoe County at 580 acres. This time we’ll be exploring the Arboretum on this former working ranch. Join us as we talk about the massive amount of plants in the arboretum and discover the history of how this park came to be. Restrooms are available. Dogs are not permitted on this walk.

 

Directions: (1595 N Sierra St, Reno, NV 89503) While traveling on I-80, take exit 13 and drive straight until you reach Sierra St. Turn north onto Sierra St., and continue for about .7 miles until you reach Putnam Dr./Hillside Dr. Turn left (west) onto Putnam Dr. and travel about 1,000 ft. There will be a parking lot on your right (north) where we'll meet (not the Wilbur D. May Center parking lot).

Idlewild Park

The park so nice we’re exploring it twice! Join us as we return to Idlewild to observe the colors starting to change in the city’s arboretum. We’ll also wander along the river as we watch for aquatic mammals such as beavers and mink to make their presence known.

Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (50 Cowan Dr. Reno, NV 89509)  From downtown Reno, drive south on Arlington Ave. and turn right (west) on 1st St. After 700 feet turn left (south) onto Riverside Dr., and follow the road until it crosses the river. Make your first right (east) on Idlewild Dr, and the park will be on your right. Turn right (north) onto Cowan Dr., and meet us at our office. 50 Cowan Dr. Reno, NV 89509 across from the California Building.
