Explore your parks with Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation

 

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is leading weekly interpretive hikes in a park near you! Come explore a new location and learn about the various ecology and unique history of parks in our area. Plan on spending a little more than one hour on each walk. Distances range from 0.5 miles to 1.5 miles. Hikes begin Thursday, April 5th, 2018 and will continue every Thursday through the end of September. The walks are free and open to everyone.

Damonte Ranch Park and Wetlands

Join us on our first Discover Your Parks walk of the season at this fantastic urban wetland in Reno. Learn about the importance of wetlands and their ecological impact, and see the creatures that thrive in this environment.

Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.


Directions: (1950 Steamboat Pkwy, Reno, NV 89521) From I-580/US 395 In Reno, head south toward Carson City. Take Exit 59 Damonte Ranch Parkway, then turn left onto Damonte Ranch Parkway. After .7 miles turn left onto Steamboat Parkway, continue another .8 miles and the park will be on your right.

Rancho San Rafael Regional Park Nature Trail

Discover the secret side of Rancho San Rafael Regional Park as we walk along this interpretive nature trail. Explore the wetland at the base of Evans Canyon and learn how certain plants can tell you where water is located. If we’re lucky, we will see a family of Great Horned Owls! No restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (2975 N Virginia St, Reno, NV 89506) From I-80 in Reno, take Exit 15 for US395-North toward Susanville. Take exit 70A (North McCarran) and stay in the left two lanes. Turn left (west) onto McCarran. Continue driving West for two miles. Turn right (north) on North Virginia Street and get into the left lane. In 1/4 mile, turn left (west) into Rancho San Rafael North Entrance (Basque Monument/Reno Sports Complex). Park in the far right corner of the parking lot by the Evans Canyon Trailhead/Basque Monument.

Sun Valley Regional Park

This hidden gem of Washoe County will take you through a fascinating Juniper-dominated ecosystem where we will learn about the plants and animals that surround us in the high desert. Discover what makes a healthy desert while seeing an expansive view of the Truckee Meadows. Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (5905 Sidehill Dr, Sun Valley, NV 89433)  At the junction of US-395 and I-80, go north on US-395 for 1.4 miles and take exit 70B for Clear Acre Ln. toward Sun Valley. The exit merges onto Clear-Acre Lane heading north and will turn into Sun Valley Blvd. after one mile. Continue north on Clear Acre Ln/Sun Valley Blvd. for 3.25 miles until you reach Quartz Ln. Turn left (west) onto Quartz Ln. and travel .2 miles (three blocks). Turn right (north) onto Sidehill Dr. and go one block. When you see Esther Bennett Elementary on your right (north), turn left (west) and drive to the end of the road. Park in the parking lot and we'll see you there!

 

Wedekind Regional Park (4th Street Entrance)

Come out and explore this scenic park with amazing views of both Sparks and Reno. Offering some of the best open spaces left in Sparks, Wedekind Regional Park displays many native species of plants and animals while showing the unfortunate effects of invasive species entrance after human interaction.

Pit toilet available at the parking lot. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (3798 4th St Sparks, NV 89436) From downtown Reno travel east on I-80 and take exit 14 for US 395 North. Head north and take exit 70A to get on north McCarran Blvd. Turn right and drive for two miles toward Sparks. Turn left onto 4th street (just after crossing Pyramid Way) and follow the road for .8 miles. We will meet at the end of the road.

Bicentennial Park, Barbara Bennett Park, and Wingfield Park

The Riverwalk District has been a key part of Reno since the early 1900s and the parks along the river are just as important today as they were back then. Come learn about how they’ve grown and adapted with the city and pick up some fun Reno history as well! Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (10 Ralston St. Reno, NV 89503) Traveling west on I-80, and take exit 12 for Keystone Avenue. Keep left (south) at the exit's fork and merge onto Keystone Ave. Travel 0.5 miles until you reach W. 1st St. Turn left (east) and drive another .5 miles until you reach Arlington Ave. We will meet under the large metal butterfly in Bicentennial Park.

Mayberry Park

Local historian Jack Hursh will join us for this trek along the Truckee River. We’ll talk about the massive cottonwoods lining the river and the species that benefit from them. Our path will lead us along the Truckee River and to a barn that has stood in this area for over 100 years. With Mr. Hursh’s help, we’ll explore yesteryear and see how our ancestors built things to last. Pit toilet available at the entrance of the park. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome, but not in the barn.


Directions: (101 Woodland Ave, Reno, NV 89523) From the intersection of W. 4th Street and S. McCarran Blvd., travel west on 4th St. for two miles and turn left (south) onto Woodland Ave. Go straight (south) on Woodland Ave. for about .5 miles until you reach the Mayberry Park parking lot. See you there!

Lockwood Loop and Interpretive Trail

This restored section of the Truckee River was once part of a trailer park, but you would never know it today. With a beautiful mix of riparian and high desert views, this walk will take us through an interpretive area full of native plants and animals. There’s even a bit of a surprise at the end you won’t want to miss! Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (981 Lockwood Rd, Sparks, NV 89434) From the junction of the US-395 and I-80, head east on I-80E for seven miles. Take exit 22 for Lockwood. Turn right (southeast) onto Canyon Way and travel for 0.2 miles. Make your second right (east) just before crossing the river and head down the dirt road until you reach the trailhead parking lot. This is where we'll meet. See you all there!

Dorostkar Park

This park sits right on the Truckee River and is a part of the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway. It’s popular with cyclists, hikers, and dog walkers alike. Come learn how to tell if a river is healthy and what role parks like this play in keeping it that way.

Directions: (6331 Mayberry Dr, Reno, NV 89519) From I-80W, take exit 10 for McCarran Blvd W. and turn left (south) onto N. McCarran Blvd. Travel .7 miles and turn right (west) onto W. 4th Street. Travel 1.7 miles on W. 4th St. and turn left (south) onto Mayberry Drive. Drive .3 miles on Mayberry Dr. and Dorostkar Park will be on your left (north). We'll meet in the parking lot.

Oxbow Nature Study Area

Come explore this park that offers you an escape to the wilderness without ever having to leave Reno city limits. Beavers, deer, and birds of all shapes and sizes have been spotted on this one-mile loop next to the Truckee River. You never know what you might see, but you are guaranteed an enjoyable time. Restrooms are available. No dogs allowed on this walk.


Directions: (3100 Dickerson Rd, Reno, NV 89503) Heading west on I-80 take exit 12 on to Keystone Ave. Turn left onto Keystone and take a right on to West 2nd St. Follow West 2nd St until it turns into Dickerson Road. Follow Dickerson Road until you enter Oxbow Nature Study Area and we will meet in the parking lot.

 

Crystal Peak Park

Take a step back in time as we venture through this Washoe County park located just outside of Verdi. Discover the amazing history of how this park went from being a bustling lumber town, to the park we see today. Ecologically, this is one of the most diverse of our parks as it is located along the Truckee River in a transition zone between the high desert and the mixed conifer forest of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (578 Crystal Park Road, Verdi, NV 89439) Follow I-80W out of town and take exit 5 at Verdi. Head straight and you'll reach a roundabout, take the second exit going straight through the roundabout (northwest) and follow 3rd St. (I-80 Business) for about 2.5 miles. Turn left (south) onto Crystal Park Road and make an immediate right (southwest) at the fork . Either continue past the overflow parking to your right or park there. We'll meet in the lower parking area at the bottom of the hill.

Ballardini Ranch Trailhead

One of Reno’s newest trail systems, Ballardini Ranch now connects to Galena Creek and Hunter Creek allowing for a long day hike just outside of Reno. We will only be exploring a tiny portion of this trail system, but with views of the entire Truckee Meadows, this will be a park you will want to visit again and again.

Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (8799 Lone Tree Ln, Reno, NV 89511) From South McCarran Blvd., turn south onto Lakeside Dr. and drive approximately two miles (You'll pass the entrance to Bartley Ranch as well as Audrey Harris Park). Turn right (west) onto Lone Tree Ln. and drive a little less than a mile. The trailhead will be on your right (north).

 

Sierra Vista Future Park Site

Ever wonder how a park becomes a park? Join us at the future site of Sierra Vista Park to find out. The former Northgate Golf Course was known for offering a world class golfing experience and now it offers some of the best hiking Reno has to offer. You won’t want to miss these amazing views!

Directions: (11199 Clubhouse Dr. Reno, NV 89523) From I-80W, take exit 9 for Robb Dr. Merge right (north) onto Robb Dr. and take your first left (west) onto Sharlands Ave. Travel .5 miles and take your second right onto Avenida De Landa. Follow that north for .7 miles until you reach Beumont Pkwy., and take a left (northwest). Travel .4 miles on Beumont Pkwy. and make your first left (west) onto Clubhouse Dr. We'll meet at the old Clubhouse.

Bartley Ranch Regional Park - Truckee Meadows Remembered – Nevada Barn Heritage with Jack Hursh

Join us for a special presentation by Jack Hursh prior to our Discovery Your Parks walk at Bartley Ranch. We will meet at 5:00 pm in the little brick white house. Jack will present a colorful slide show of his photography on local historical timber framed barns and features the story on the “Truckee Meadows Remembered” historical ranch outbuildings on display at Bartley Ranch Park.

Bartley Ranch Regional Park

Ever wonder what Reno was like during the days of the wild west? Local historians, Jack Hursh and Loren Jahn, will take us on an explorative journey through time as we tour the Old Huffaker Schoolhouse and then follow the Quail Run Trail to the Historic Ranch Heritage Preserve buildings that were brought to the park with the help of Truckee Meadows Remembered. Don’t miss this exciting look into Reno’s past!  Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.


Directions: (6000 Bartley Ranch Rd, Reno, NV 89511) From South McCarran, turn south onto Lakeside Dr. Travel less than 0.5 mile down Lakeside Drive, turn left (southeast) onto Bartley Ranch Rd. Go under the covered bridge and turn into the parking lot on your right. We'll meet at the historic Huffaker School House on your right (west).

Hidden Valley Regional Park (North Entrance)

It's all about the high desert at Hidden Valley Regional Park. We'll meet at the trailhead and hike about one mile down the trail. Expect an extraordinary view of Reno, and learn about the miles of trails available to hike here. Keep an eye out for a variety of wildlife as the park has everything from wild horses to snow leopard geckos living within its borders.

Restrooms are available. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome.

 

Directions: (4740 Parkway Dr., Reno) From South McCarran, go east on Pembroke for about two miles. Turn right (south) on Parkway Dr. and continue for .6 miles until you reach Hidden Valley Regional Park on your left (east). Parkway Drive forks east and south. Continue straight (south) on Parkway Drive until you reach a parking lot on your left.

Galena Creek Regional Park (Galena Loop)

Located at the base of Mt. Rose, Galena Creek Regional Park is a stunning example of the best the Sierra Nevadas have to offer. Large jeffrey and ponderosa pines line the loop we will be walking and there’s a chance we might even see a black bear.

Directions: (18250 Mt Rose Hwy, Reno, NV 89511)  Take 395/280 to Mt Rose Highway (341 West).  Drive about 5.5 miles to the Galena Visitor Center exit.  We will meet in the first large parking area to your right (Galena Visitor Center).

Wildcreek Park

Discover a hiking area hidden within Sparks as we visit Wildcreek Park. Our hike will showcase the geological features that make up the eastern side of the Truckee Meadows. We’ll also talk about native plants and how they have adapted to survive in the arid Nevada climate.

Directions: (3680 El Rancho Blvd. Sun Valley, NV 89433) From US-395, north of downtown, exit on N. McCarran Blvd, and turn east. Head east and turn left at the next traffic light (El Rancho). Drive north about 1/2 mile, and turn right at the entrance to Wildcreek Park. (Near Weems Way.)

 

Bowers Mansion Park

Watch history come to life as the Young Chautauqua join us on this walk around the grounds of the Bowers Mansion. For the native Washo people, gold prospectors, and even Mark Twain, this area played a huge part in shaping the lives of the people who shaped our state. Experience this Discover Your Parks Walk before it becomes history. Restrooms are available. No dogs are allowed on this walk.

 

Directions: (4005 Bowers Mansion Rd, New Washoe City, NV 89704) To get to Bowers Mansion from Reno take I-580/395 south until you reach exit 50. Take exit 50 the entrance to the park will be on your right after about half a mile. We will meet next to the mansion!

Rock Park

Join us for a one mile stroll down the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway along the Truckee River. We'll explore Whitewater Park and see what plants and animals we can discover in the late afternoon (skunks included!). Come check out this success story of urban revitalization and river corridor beautification.

Directions: (1405 S Rock Blvd, Sparks, NV 89431) From I-80, take the Rock Blvd exit south about one mile. The park is on your right. We'll meet in the first parking area you come to.

Virginia Lake Park

Ever wonder how urban lakes work? We’ll explain how this one was created on this one mile walk around its perimeter. We will also talk about water birds, algae blooms, and geothermal energy. Don’t miss this fun and informative walk.

Directions: (1980 Lakeside Dr, Reno, NV 89509) From the intersection of 4th St. and S. Virginia in Downtown Reno, head south on S. Virginia St. for 1.7 miles. Turn right (west) onto Plumb Lane and drive one block. Turn left (south) onto Lakeside Drive and travel .4 miles on the west side of the lake. We'll meet at the playground at the southwest corner of the lake.

Deer Park

Come meet the TMPF Team! We’ll be taking a quick walk around one of the oldest parks in Sparks and see a pool that has been here since the 1940’s. After our short walk, join us for some complimentary ice cream and your chance to meet the team that makes everything Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation does possible.

Idlewild Park

One of the best loved parks in Reno, Idlewild Park is full of plenty of hidden ecological and historical gems. We’ll wander through the number of trees, some you can’t see anywhere else in Nevada. Join us and find out just how special this park is.

Directions: (50 Cowan Dr. Reno, NV 89509 ) From downtown Reno, drive south on Arlington Ave. and turn right (west) on 1st St. After 700 feet turn left (south) onto Riverside Dr., and follow the road until it crosses the river. Make your first right (east) on Idlewild Dr, and the park will be on your right. Turn right (north) onto Cowan Dr., and meet us at our office.

Cottonwood Park

Please note this walk starts at 7:00 pm. Join us for one of the most exciting shows nature offers as we watch thousands of brazilian free tailed bats fly out for their nightly feeding. As we walk along to river to watch the bats, we could also see beavers, skunks and other wildlife. You won’t want to miss this walk.

Directions: (777 Spice Islands Drive, Sparks) Heading east on I-80, take exit 19 and turn south on McCarran Blvd. about .75 miles and turn left onto Greg St. Take your first right onto Spice Island Dr. and follow that about .5 miles to Cottonwood Park on your right.

Swan Lake Nature Study Area- CANCELLED

North Valleys Regional Park

Join us as we explore this high desert park that features over 126 acres of open space and a water splash park for kids! Located in the Stead community.

Directions: (8085 Silver Lake Road, Reno, NV 89506)

From I-80E, Use the second from the right lane to take US-395N towards Susanville.
Keep left at the fork, follow signs for US-395 N/Susanville.
Take exit 74 for Lemmon Drive.
Keep right at the fork to continue on Lemmon Drive.
Merge onto Lemmon Drive and use the left two lanes to turn left onto Sky Vista Parkway.
Continue onto Sky Vista Parkway for 1.3 miles until you reach the park.

Rancho San Rafael Regional Park and Wilbur D. May Arboretum

Rancho San Rafael Regional Park is one of the largest parks in Washoe County at 580 acres. This time we’ll be exploring the Arboretum on this former working ranch. Join us as we talk about the massive amount of plants in the arboretum and discover the history of how this park came to be.

Restrooms are available. No dogs are allowed on this walk.

 

Directions: (1595 N Sierra St, Reno, NV 89503) While traveling on I-80, take exit 13 and drive straight until you reach Sierra St. Turn north onto Sierra St., and continue for about .7 miles until you reach Putnam Dr./Hillside Dr. Turn left (west) onto Putnam Dr. and travel about 1,000 ft. There will be a parking lot on your right (north) where we'll meet (not the Wilbur D. May Center parking lot).

 

Sparks Marina

On this late summer saunter we’ll stroll around the entire two mile trail around Helms Lake and learn about the interesting history of how the Sparks Marina was created. We will have great views of the open water, and should witness a stunning sunset at the end of our walk.

Directions: (300 Howard Dr, Sparks, NV 89434) From I-80 eastbound, exit 19 for S. McCarran Blvd. in Sparks. Turn left (north) onto S. McCarran Blvd. and then turn right (east) onto Nichols Blvd. Travel about 1,000 feet and turn left (north) at the roundabout onto Howard Drive. Make your first right (east) into the large parking lot. Once in the parking lot, turn left (north) and we'll meet at the north end of the parking lot.

Idlewild Park

The park so nice we’re exploring it twice! Join us as we return to Idlewild to observe the colors starting to change in the city’s arboretum. We’ll also wander along the river as we watch for aquatic mammals such as beavers and mink to make their presence known.

Directions: (50 Cowan Dr. Reno, NV 89509)  From downtown Reno, drive south on Arlington Ave. and turn right (west) on 1st St. After 700 feet turn left (south) onto Riverside Dr., and follow the road until it crosses the river.
