Position: Education and Outreach Coordinator State/National

 

Organization: One Truckee River (OTR)

 

Summary

The One Truckee River Education and Outreach Coordinator, an AmeriCorps member, will be an essential member of the OTR team.

Position Description

The member will organize and attend outreach events in the community that highlight the mission of One Truckee River.  This will include participating in the revitalization of Brodhead Park in Reno, and the first phase of OTR’s River Restroom project, which is installing a public restroom adjacent to the park. The AmeriCorps member will engage with the surrounding community to encourage positive use of Brodhead Park through events and activities, as well as river care and education in the community. The AmeriCorps member will also work to expand OTR’s presence in the community, inviting members to become active supporters of the initiative. Frequent weekend work may be required.  This person will work to foster engagement and maintain relationships with current stakeholders and seek partnerships with new stakeholders. This position will require 40 hours of service per week, with Federal/State holidays off, and 2 weeks’ vacation.

Service Location: Reno, NV

 

Timeline for Service: November 2019-August 2020

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with Truckee River watershed stakeholders

  • Plan and execute the 3rd annual One Truckee River Month celebration

  • Develop watershed education and community involvement opportunities for youth and

  • adults based on the existing One Truckee River Watershed Education Plan

  • Plan and execute a community-wide River Stories contest and live reading

  • Encourage community members to sign up for OTR quarterly newsletter and social media sites

  • Coordinate prizes from local businesses as incentives for events

  • Assist with creation of an OTR marketing plan

  • Assist with creation of community survey for Brodhead Park neighborhood

  • Assist with grant applications

  • Engage with businesses around Brodhead Park to encourage river responsibility

  • Maintain data and records relating to the OTR programs

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with school administrators and teachers

  • Work with community organizations on mission-driven initiatives such as dog waste, green waste, car wash awareness

  • Support other OTR Management Plan action items when necessary and as skills apply

  • Contribute social media and blog posts on a regular basis

 

Qualifications

  • Passionate commitment to OTR mission and vision

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or related field

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

  • Exceptional writing skills

  • Outgoing personality and strong communication skills

  • Flexibility, optimism and a good sense of humor

  • Comfort working with low-income and homeless populations

  • Strong organizational skills

  • High degree of initiative and spirit of service

  • Clean driver’s license and reliable vehicle

  • Preferred: strong understanding of education standards and experience in curriculum development

  • Preferred: experience with event and volunteer coordination and planning

  • Preferred: experience teaching in formal or informal settings

  • Preferred: experience working for environmental education centers, nature centers, and/or summer camps

  • Preferred: reading, writing and speaking competency in Spanish language

  • Preferred: communications experience (social media, basic graphic design, and public speaking)

AmeriCorps State/National

OTR's Education and Outreach Coordinator position is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and will serve within the AmeriCorps program. Member Benefits

In return for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance of $7,408/year, health benefits during their service, and will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $3,047.50.
