Be the backbone in our efforts to promote parks, trails, & open spaces! As our VISTA Leader will help lead, recruit, retain, develop, & support VISTA members to improve community health and wellness.

Position Description

As the VISTA Leader for the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, you'll be a key player in supporting our growing nonprofit organization. In this role, you'll collaborate with the AmeriCorps and Community Service Manager to improve the recruitment and retention of AmeriCorps positions. You'll maintain an applicant database, update and disseminate position descriptions, and conduct interviews with eligible candidates.

In addition, you'll be responsible for enhancing the professional development opportunities available to VISTA members at our organization, as well as at Lahontan Audubon Society, City of Reno, and Help Save the Bees. As a VISTA Leader, you'll provide support to VISTAs through one-on-one meetings, resource sharing, and promoting a culture of service. You'll also help improve our data collection procedures and sustainability plans, ensuring that we're making a lasting impact in the community.

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is a private nonprofit that was incorporated in 2012 and received its 501(c)(3) determination in 2013. The Parks Foundation protects and enhances our communities' livability through public engagement, education, and the sustainability of our parks, open spaces, and trails. Current programs focus on improving community health and wellness and developing people’s appreciation for the natural and cultural history found in local parks. A special emphasis is placed on increasing access to free programming for low income community members in order to improve education and health outcomes for people living in poverty.

AmeriCorps VISTA

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation’s VISTA Leader is funded by AmeriCorps and will serve within the AmeriCorps VISTA program. AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Each VISTA member makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. Primary Responsibilities

  • Improve and maintain Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation’s VISTA recruitment database and assist in the creation and dispersion of VISTA service opportunities and VISTA Assignment Descriptions (VADs);

  • Improve and implement Parks Foundation VISTA on-site orientations and trainings;

  • Research and organize monthly professional development opportunities for VISTA members at five different nonprofit organizations;

  • Improve and maintain a database to track VISTA performance measures;

  • Assist in the compilation of the Parks Foundation’s annual report;

  • Provide support and resources to VISTAs within Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation’s consortium;

  • Help update and improve the Parks Foundation’s sustainability plan.

Qualifications

  • One year of AmeriCorps or Peace Corps service REQUIRED;

  • Passionate commitment to Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation's mission and vision;

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or one year equivalent experience;

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;

  • Exceptional writing skills;

  • Strong communication skills;

  • Strong organizational skills;

  • High degree of initiative and spirit of service;

  • Preferred: experience recruiting;

  • Preferred: experience with event planning;

  • Preferred: reading, writing, and speaking competency in Spanish language.

Compensation and Benefits

  • In return for their service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a living allowance of approximately $25,280.

  • Upon completion of service, choice of Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of approximately $6,800 or post-service stipend of $3,000.

  • A relocation settling-in allowance of no less than $750 if you are moving more than 50 miles, and travel allowance based on mileage may also apply.

  • Health benefits during service.

  • Child care assistance (if applicable).

  • Qualified student loan deferment or forbearance.

  • Non-competitive eligibility for qualified government jobs the first year after completing service.

  • Professional development through monthly training, skills learned in service, and experience in a nonprofit environment.

  • 10 days personal/vacation time and 10 days sick leave.

  • Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation offers flex time, mileage reimbursement for service-related travel, a casual dress code, and a fun office environment!
