Programs and Events Manager

Summary:

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation supports Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County parks primarily by providing in-park programming, fundraising for park infrastructure upgrades, and opportunities for citizen engagement. The Parks Foundation is an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In the six years since its founding,  the Parks Foundation has grown to seven full-time permanent staff overseeing 33 AmeriCorps members who generally serve one-year terms. Our current programs focus on improving community health and wellness, science education, and developing an appreciation for the natural and cultural history found in our local parks. 

 

Position Description:

The Programs and Events Manager will be an essential part of the Parks Foundation. This person will maintain a positive office atmosphere and oversee the development and implementation of Parks Foundation’s programs and events. This person will foster positive public awareness, understanding, and support of Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation through effective oversight and execution of programs and events operating under the Health Parks, Healthy People initiative. This person will also oversee the VISTA program grant, as well as be the direct supervisor for the VISTA Leader, Programs and Events Coordinator VISTA, and Community Outreach Coordinator VISTA. VISTA supervisor duties include recruiting, conducting on-site orientations and training, evaluations, project delegation, and support.

 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Programming Tasks:

    • Oversee the development and implementation of the Parks Foundation’s hiking programs including the Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge, Discover Your Parks Walks, and Dementia Friendly Nature Walks;

    • Oversee and manage the Parks Foundation’s ongoing programs including the Parks Rephotography Project and online Parks Project;

    • Direct and facilitate Parks Foundation events such as the bi-annual cleanup events, volunteer events, and MiniBioBlitz event;

    • Improve and expand programs and events including developing a Trails Challenge subscription service and creating an interpretation improvement plan for programming; 

    • Develop and manage professional partnerships to expand the programming at the Parks Foundation;

    • Create more avenues for program income including diversifying paid group hikes and events and incorporating more businesses in the Trails Challenge program. 

 

  • Supervisory Tasks:

    • Oversee VISTA Leader, Programs and Events Coordinator VISTA, and Community Outreach Coordinator VISTA;

    • Oversee and manage the development, communication, and implementation of strategic initiatives to foster positive public awareness, understanding, and support of Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation;

    • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment for AmeriCorps members through constructive feedback, professional development, and future career planning;

    • Provide 90-day, six month, and final term performance evaluations to all direct reports;

    • Assist with recruiting, interviewing and onboarding VISTA Leader, Programs and Events Coordinator VISTA, and Community Outreach Coordinator VISTA.

 

  • VISTA Grant Tasks:

    • Manage the operational and administrative duties associated with a federal AmeriCorps grant;

    • Assist in writing the AmeriCorps continuation grant application;

    • Manage and plan for the recruitment and training of AmeriCorps VISTAs at the Parks Foundation and subsites;

    • Plan and conduct VISTA on-site orientations and trainings for VISTAs at the Parks Foundation and subsites;

    • Manage and track all AmeriCorps VISTA files and documents; 

    • Track grant performance measures and monthly progress reports;

    • Prepare and submit program grant reports;

    • Oversee and manage VISTA subsites including providing orientations and check ins with VISTA supervisors;

    • Manage the expansion of the VISTA program to include more subsites and partnerships; 

    • Assist the Development Officer in securing federal and private grants to support the program.

 

  • Misc. Job Functions:

    • Including but not limited to:

      • Provide support to Executive Director, staff, and AmeriCorps members as needed;

      • Lead occasional on-site programming such as walks, hikes or school programs. Training will be provided as necessary;

      • Special events throughout the year including occasional evenings and weekends.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 2+ years related professional experience;

  • Exceptional writing and communication skills;

  • Demonstrated success in managing programs and/or events;

  • Must pass a background check and hold a valid driver’s license;

  • Preferred: experience recruiting;

  • Preferred: reading, writing, and speaking competency in Spanish language.

  • Preferred: experience serving as, or managing AmeriCorps and/or Peace Corps members.

 

Reports to:  Executive Director

 

Compensation: $30,000 - $36,000

 

Benefits: 120 hours personal leave per calendar year. 80 hours sick leave per calendar year.  Up to $400 per month for health coverage reimbursement (proof of health insurance required); retirement IRA matched at 3% after one-year of employment. Paid travel and training to become a Certified Interpretive Guide and Certified Interpretive Trainer.
