Synopsis

Are you interested in gaining professional leadership experience, empowering communities, and making a lasting difference? Join the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation team through AmeriCorps VISTA! The VISTA Leader will focus on VISTA recruitment and retention, creating new professional development opportunities for VISTA members, and provide resources and support to AmeriCorps VISTA members.

 

Position Description

The VISTA Leader will be an essential member of the team for this growing nonprofit organization. This person will help to support Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation in assisting the Operations Director in VISTA recruitment and retention of AmeriCorps positions by improving and maintaining an applicant database, updating and dispersing position descriptions, and interviewing eligible candidates. 

 

The VISTA Leader will increase the professional development opportunities offered to VISTA members at the Parks Foundation, Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, Washoe County Health District, and Envirolution. VISTA Leader’s play a crucial role in providing support to VISTAs through one-on-one meetings, providing resources throughout service, and promoting a spirit of service for all VISTA members. The VISTA Leader will also help improve data collection procedures and sustainability binders.  

 

The mission of Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is to support the parks departments operating in Truckee Meadows including Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County parks. This is accomplished primarily by providing in-park educational and health-based programming for community engagement. The Parks Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization that began operating in 2013. Current programs focus on improving community health and wellness and developing people’s appreciation for the natural and cultural history found in local parks. A special emphasis is placed on increasing access to free programming for low income community members in order to improve education and health outcomes for people living in poverty.

 

Service Location: Reno, NV

 

Timeline for Service: January 21, 2020 – January 20, 2021

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Improve and maintain Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation’s VISTA recruitment database and assist in the creation and dispersion of VISTA service opportunities and VISTA Assignment Descriptions (VADs);

  • Improve and implement Parks Foundation VISTA on-site orientations and trainings;

  • Research and organize monthly professional development opportunities for VISTA members at four different nonprofit organizations;

  • Improve and maintain a database to track VISTA performance measures; 

  • Assist in the compilation of the Parks Foundation’s annual report;

  • Provide support and resources to VISTAs within Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation’s consortium;

  • Help update and improve the Parks Foundation’s sustainability plan.

 

Qualifications

  • One year of AmeriCorps or Peace Corps service REQUIRED; 

  • Passionate commitment to Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation's mission and vision;

  • Bachelor’s degree;

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;

  • Exceptional writing skills;

  • Strong communication skills;

  • Strong organizational skills;

  • High degree of initiative and spirit of service;

  • Preferred: experience recruiting;

  • Preferred: experience with event planning;

  • Preferred: reading, writing, and speaking competency in Spanish language.

 

AmeriCorps VISTA

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation’s VISTA Leader is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and will serve within the AmeriCorps VISTA program. AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Each VISTA member makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. Compensation and Benefits

  • In return for their service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance of $14,892. 

  • Health benefits during service. 

  • Childcare opportunities (If applicable). 

  • Qualified student loan deferment or forbearance.

  • Non-competitive eligibility for qualified government jobs the first year after completing service. 

  • Upon completion of service, choice of Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $6,095 or post-service stipend of $3,000. 

  • A relocation settling in allowance of no less than $750 if you are moving more than 50 miles, and travel allowance based on mileage may also apply. 

  • Professional development through monthly trainings, skills learned in service, experience in a non-profit environment.

  • Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation offers flex time, mileage reimbursement for service-related travel, a casual dress code, and a fun office environment!
