Volunteer Coordinator VISTA

Summary:

The Volunteer Coordinator VISTA will analyze, research, develop and expand the volunteer recruitment, training, and retention plan for Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space. The Volunteer Coordinator VISTA will develop and coordinate park volunteer projects and build sustainability into the volunteer program.

 

Position Description:

The Volunteer Coordinator VISTA will be an essential member of the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space team. This person will strategically implement improvements to volunteer program including creating protocols for recruiting, training, appreciating, and managing volunteers who will assist in implementing community programs, park clean-ups, and similar volunteer activities. 

 

The mission of Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is to provide exceptional

parks, open space, and diverse recreational opportunities to enhance the quality of life in Carson City, while preserving our natural resources for future generations. Carson City Parks works to address poverty alleviation by providing all families, especially low-income families, the opportunity to recreate and get healthy outside while enjoying their local parks and open spaces.

Service Location: Carson City, NV

 

Timeline for Service: December, 2019 - December, 2020

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Improve and expand volunteer recruitment, training, and retention based on research of the current programs and best practices;

  • Develop and implement an effective acquisition, on-boarding, and retention plan for volunteer leads;

  • Secure funding to support volunteer program efforts and sustainability through private grants, donations, or sponsorships;

  • Promote volunteer activities and opportunities through both traditional and social media advertising;

  • Establish an Adopt-A-Park volunteer program to get more volunteers engaged in creating healthy park spaces for community members.

 

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space mission and vision;

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, recreation, marketing, advertising, business, public administration, or a related field;

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;

  • Exceptional writing skills;

  • Strong communication skills;

  • Strong organizational skills;

  • High degree of initiative and spirit of service;

  • Preferred: experience in volunteer management and recruitment;

  • Preferred: experience with website, graphic design, and management;

  • Preferred: reading, writing, and speaking competency in Spanish language.

 

AmeriCorps VISTA:

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space’s Volunteer Coordinator VISTA position is funded by the Corporations for National and Community Service and will serve within the AmeriCorps VISTA program. AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty and increase organizational capacity. Each VISTA member makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. Housing:

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space provides housing at a Carson City park! A separate housing agreement is required if the selected candidate chooses this option.

Compensation:

In return for their service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance of $12,490, housing option, 10 sick days, 10 personal days, and health benefits during their service. VISTA members also have the option of receiving a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $6,095 or post-service stipend of $1,800 after completing their service. A relocation travel allowance of no less than $750 may also apply if you are moving.
