Local Reno Adventures

Nevada is a pretty amazing place if you stop to think about it. We are the most mountainous state in the lower 48, we have more public land to explore than any other state except Alaska, we have ghost towns, hieroglyphs, hot springs and that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the adventures you can find. So to take advantage of these adventures you have to grab a map, gas up your car, and travel for hours to some off the grid location that is nearly inaccessible right? Nope, there is plenty of excitement to be found in our local parks!

Take public lands for example. Nevada has miles and miles of land managed by the BLM, the forest service or set aside as state and national parks. These wide open spaces are set aside for people like you and me as a place to escape from the hustle of everyday life and get some fresh air. Locally you could go to Wedekind Regional Park, managed by the City of Sparks or Sun Valley Regional Park, managed by Washoe County. Both of these parks offer acres of wide open space with hiking trails that will take you to some of the most scenic views the Truckee Meadows have to offer

Are you looking to get away into the mountains? Visit Galena Creek Regional Park. Another park managed by Washoe County, Galena Creek Regional Park runs along the base of Mt. Rose and through forested areas that look like they were plucked right out of a story book. Huffaker Park, managed by the City of Reno, sits at the base of ancient volcanoes in an area that has been geologically dated back millions of years.

For ghost town buffs there’s Crystal Peak Park in Verdi which was once a bustling lumber town. There are remnants of the former buildings scattered throughout the park. There is also Bartley Ranch Regional Park which features a recreated village full of historic buildings which show what Reno looked like in the early 1900’s.

Between the local parks and trails the Truckee Meadows offers the best outdoor experience you can find in Nevada, and Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation offers the best way to experience the Truckee Meadows. From our Discover Your Parks Walks to the Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge, the staff and AmeriCorps members of TMPF are dedicated to providing the best possible experience in our local parks. So come join us, and explore this amazing place we are lucky enough to call home.
