Views

Panoramic views of the Virginia Range foothills and the Sierra Nevada Range make this a lovely park. The highest peak in the Virginia Range, Mount Davidson, can be seen southeast from the park.

Mining

In 1859 silver ore was discovered in this mountain by American miner Henry Comstock. This discovery brought thousands of prospectors to the area and many of the early settlers, such as Peleg Brown and G. Huffaker.

Mount Rose

Another peak in the horizon to the west, is that of Mount Rose, which rises over 10,000 feet above sea level. Some claim that the peak was named after Jacob H. Rose, an early mill owner in the area of Washoe Lake. Others claim that the name comes from H.S. Ham, a printer for the Washoe Times newspaper who was among the first to climb Mount Rose in 1865 with a group including Rose Hickman, and he named the peak after her.

Park Features

Horizon View Park is the City of Reno’s 81st park, and was dedicated in September 2007. Besides the play structure, the park features a 14-foot high piece of artwork called “Wind Dancers.” David Boyer, the artist who created the sculpture, formed it to evoke a feeling of reaching for the skies.
